With Valentine’s Day quickly approaching, students are trying to find gifts for their sweethearts. The Drake Choir is offering a solution to this dilemma.
The choir will be delivering live duets of “Till There Was You” from “The Music Man” to any special someone.
The valentine orders are open to students, faculty and the surrounding Des Moines community. Sophomore Sarah Bannon, choral assistant and head of the Singing Valentines committee, says the choir will deliver anywhere on the Drake campus and in the Des Moines metro area.
“I hope that promotions like this will help get the Drake Choir’s name out there,” Bannon said.
Freshman Mary Honeyman, a member of the committee, believes the event is a worthwhile opportunity for the choir.
“The event will take a lot of work, but the efforts will pay off to see the look on people’s faces when they receive their valentine,” Honeyman said.
On-campus deliveries cost $10 and will include a song and a rose, and deliveries in the Des Moines area will cost $25. Bannon says the choir is also offering a “Cupid’s Favorite” package, which includes a song and six roses.
Honeyman wanted to become involved with the Singing Valentines after hearing a story of a man who used the Drake choir as a set up to propose to his girlfriend later that evening.
“I’m especially excited for the whole event,” Honeyman said. “Anything can happen.”
The Singing Valentines are available for delivery between 10 a.m. and 8 p.m. on Feb. 12 and between 11 a.m. and 8 p.m. on Feb. 13. The on-campus $10 special will only be delivering from 5 to 8 p.m. on the 12th and 3 to 8 p.m. on the 13th.
Each member is required to deliver at least one valentine in order to raise money for the Drake Choir’s 2012 European tour. The event is completely student-run, with the students organizing the deliveries and preparing the roses. Bannon says this year’s goal is to sell at least 150 orders.
Singing Valentines can be purchased at drake.edu/valentines, or by filling out a traditional order form that is available from any choir member or through Drake Choir Director Aimee Beckmann-Collier. Buyers can also adjust the form to include special delivery instructions.
